How Calm Timer works
Calm Timer helps parents respond consistently by using a pre-agreed sequence of green, amber, and red. Green is the goal. Amber and red signal the next step if calm does not return.
The green / amber / red flow
- Start the timer and read the parent script out loud.
- Green counts first. If calm is sustained, the session ends with praise.
- Amber signals the next step is coming. Keep the tone neutral.
- Red signals the pre-agreed consequence. Offer a brief repair prompt.
What to avoid
- Using the timer as a threat or a punishment.
- Harsh alarms, shaming language, or sarcasm.
- Changing the rules mid-session.
- Stacking extra consequences when red is reached.
Best fit ages
Calm Timer works best for children who can understand simple cause-and-effect language (often ages 3–10), but parents can adjust the language and durations for older or younger kids.
When to use safety mode
If behavior escalates to unsafe levels, activate Safety Mode. It pauses consequences and focuses on containment and de-escalation until everyone is safe.
